Madonna's Greek holiday sparks political dispute

Pop star Madonna’s vacation in Greece has sparked a heated political dispute between Greek officials. The controversy began following reports that residents in the village of Kouramades on Corfu were asked to close their windows to protect the singer’s privacy during her birthday celebrations.

SYRIZA MP Elena Akrita criticized the measures, arguing that Greece should not be treated like a “plantation in the south” where locals must accommodate wealthy tourists at the expense of their own environment and community. In response, Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis defended the visit, stating that Madonna’s presence provides “free advertising worth millions of euros” and benefits the tourism industry.

The exchange escalated into personal attacks, with Georgiadis criticizing Akrita’s political standing and Akrita accusing the government of prioritizing luxury tourism over local dignity.

Amidst the political friction, Madonna has shared spiritual moments from her trip, including visits to the Cave of the Apocalypse and local churches on the island of Patmos. She described the island as “magical” and noted the personal significance of returning there with her son, Rocco, many years after her first visit to Greece while pregnant.
