Madonna blames budget dispute for halted biopic, turns to new album Confessions II

Madonna told Interview Magazine that her long‑planned biopic with Universal Pictures collapsed after a budget clash. She said the film needed a large budget to match her “extraordinary” life, and even a cost‑saving proposal to shoot in Serbia was rejected, with studio executives doubting she would stay there.

After the fallout, Netflix approached her about a limited‑series adaptation, but Madonna could not reuse the script she wrote for Universal without buying it back at an “extortionist’s price” and she struggled to find a suitable showrunner, leaving the project in limbo.

The setbacks pushed the pop icon back into music. She teamed up again with producer Stuart Price for a new record, Confessions II, slated for release on 3 July. The album includes collaborations with Stromae, a song co‑written with her daughter Lourdes Leon, and tracks reflecting family trauma.

Madonna also said she no longer wants to be naked because “everyone is naked,” opting to wear clothes and focus on ideas, and she disclosed a knee injury from years of dancing that has forced her to modify her workout routine.
