Madras High Court orders report on officials facing corruption charges
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu State Government to submit a detailed report regarding government officials facing corruption allegations. The court requested data on the number of officials across various departments accused of graft, the specific cases registered against them, and the subsequent departmental actions taken.
The directive follows a petition alleging that officials, including tahsildars, misappropriated approximately Rs 2.35 crore intended for students in Adi Dravidar Welfare hostels between 2017 and 2023. The petitioner claimed that despite an FIR being filed against eight tahsildars, no significant action was taken, with some accused individuals receiving promotions or being allowed to retire.
During the proceedings, the bench questioned why officials accused of corruption continue to be retained in government service, noting that while governments may change, the officials remain. The State's counsel requested additional time to provide the requested details.
