The Madras High Court’s Madurai Bench on 27 July 2026 set aside the Tamil Nadu government order that had granted compassionate government jobs to the families of those killed in the Karur stampede. The bench, comprising Justices C. V. Karthikeyan and R. Sakthivel, held that the appointments violated Articles 14 and 16 of the Indian Constitution, which guarantee equality and equal opportunity in public employment. It warned that such compassionate appointments would open “floodgates” for similar demands in future incidents and suggested the state provide financial aid, skills training, technical education or support for small‑business start‑ups instead.

The stampede occurred on 27 September 2025 during a rally led by TV K political leader C. Joseph Vijay in Karur district, killing 41 people. On 10 July 2026 the chief minister distributed appointment orders to 31 relatives of the victims. The state government has indicated it may challenge the High Court ruling before the Supreme Court.
