Madrid administration incurs losses through public building sales and leases

The Community of Madrid sold eight emblematic public buildings to generate immediate revenue during the economic crisis, totaling approximately 128.5 million euros. However, documentation obtained via transparency laws reveals that the administration subsequently spent 101.5 million euros in rent to remain as tenants in those same properties.

In one specific instance involving a building at Vía Lusitana, 21, in the Carabanchel district, the administration sold the property for roughly 16.7 million euros in 2014. By the time the lease expired in July 2026, the total expenditure for renting the space had reached approximately 26.8 million euros, resulting in a net loss of over 10 million euros for the public treasury.
