Madrid advances Cercanías extension to Navalcarnero and Metro Line 11 upgrade

The Spanish Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has commissioned a €619,266 feasibility study to assess a new Cercanías commuter‑rail link between Móstoles (population 214,817) and Navalcarnero (33,331). The two‑year study will evaluate construction viability, integration with existing lines, and potential service to nearby towns such as Cenicientos, Sevilla la Nueva and Navas del Rey. The project revives work that began in 2009 but was halted in 2010, and reflects ministerial support for completing the halted infrastructure.

The Community of Madrid announced a €104 million investment to equip new stations on the expanded Metro Line 11, which will run 6.7 km between Plaza Elíptica and Conde de Casal. The contract covers installation of 29 elevators, 60 escalators, fire‑protection systems and catenary upgrades. Construction is already 45 % complete, with tunnel boring completed between the future Comillas and Madrid Río stations and station works nearing 60 % progress. The line is intended to create a diagonal axis across the metro network, improving connectivity and reducing travel times.
