Madrid airport luggage scam nets 90,000 euros in fraud

A fraudulent group in Spain has allegedly defrauded airlines of approximately 90,000 euros through a sophisticated luggage scam, primarily operating at airports in Madrid.

The scheme involved passengers traveling on domestic low-cost flights with a child. Upon arrival, the child would collect the checked luggage from the carousel and exit the airport alone. Meanwhile, the adult passenger would report the bag as lost at the airline's service desk. Because the luggage had already left the arrival area, airline searches were unsuccessful.

To maximize profits, the perpetrators reportedly claimed compensation for items valued between 1,500 and 1,800 euros per bag. These amounts were strategically chosen to sit near the international maximum reimbursement limit, which is calculated based on Special Drawing Rights (SDR) from the International Monetary Fund.
