Spain’s historic sites draw visitors: castles, Barrio de las Letras and El Toboso

Tourists can explore Spain’s medieval heritage by visiting a selection of castles in villages named among the country’s most beautiful. Highlights include the seaside fortress of Peñíscola, the high‑altitude stronghold of Morella, and the mist‑shrouded Puebla de Sanabria, each offering historic interpretation centres and panoramic views.

In central Madrid, the Barrio de las Letras offers a pedestrian‑friendly cultural walk just minutes from the Prado, Thyssen‑Bornemisza and Reina Sofía museums. The neighbourhood’s cobbled streets display verses from Cervantes, Lope de Vega and other Golden Age writers, and host the Casa‑Museo Lope de Vega and historic taverns.

Further south in the province of Toledo, the town of El Toboso presents a literary pilgrimage centred on the Museum Cervantino, which displays editions of Don Quixote in more than 80 languages. Visitors can also see the Museum of Graphic Humor “Dulcinea”, the historic Casa de Dulcinea and the Baroque Church of San Antonio Abad.
