Madrid and Gijón enforce stricter low‑emission zone rules

In Madrid, historic vehicles can still circulate within the city‑wide low‑emission zone (ZBE) but only for occasional use, limited to 96 days per year. Exceeding this limit incurs a fine of €200 (reduced to €100). Historic cars are also barred from most regulated parking zones, except in the central district where only models older than 50 years may park on designated spaces.

In Gijón, the forthcoming ZBE on the La Calzada corridor will initially operate without monetary penalties. The municipality has set the start of fines for 1 January 2029, linking the delay to the stalled Jove tunnel project and efforts to divert heavy‑truck traffic away from the city centre. Until then, violations will be addressed through awareness campaigns aimed at promoting sustainable mobility.
