Madrid announces EuroBasket 2029 hosting and Siete Estrellas sports awards

President Isabel Díaz Ayuso unveiled Madrid as the main venue for EuroBasket 2029, with the opening game and later knockout stages to be played at the Santiago Bernabéu, expected to draw up to 80,000 spectators. The tournament will feature 24 national teams, with 15 group‑stage matches in Madrid and additional games in Athens (Greece), Ljubljana (Slovenia) and Tallinn (Estonia). Ayuso cited an economic impact of more than €270 million and highlighted Madrid’s experience hosting major events such as the 2007 EuroBasket finals, the 2014 FIBA World Cup, and the upcoming Formula 1 and Formula E races.

In parallel, the Community of Madrid confirmed the winners of the 2024 and 2025 Premios Siete Estrellas del Deporte. Top honours went to motorcycle racers Marc and Álex Márquez and former basketball star Sergio Rodríguez as best male athletes, while María Pérez (2024) and Blanca Hervás (2025) were named best female athletes. Emerging talents Vicky López and Rafael Jódar received promise awards. Clubs Real Canoe Natación and Club Voleibol Leganés were recognized as best entities, and municipalities Tres Cantos and Aranjuez received awards for sport promotion. Private sponsors JOMA and MADCUP, as well as foundations such as Unoentrecienmil and the UAX Rafa Nadal university school, were also honoured for contributions to sport and inclusion.
