Pedro Antonio Sánchez: Supreme Court upholds prison sentence

The Supreme Court of Spain has upheld the conviction of Pedro Antonio Sánchez, the former president of the Murcia region, regarding the ‘Auditorio case’ in Puerto Lumbreras. The ruling ratifies a sentence of three years in prison, 17 years and three months of disqualification from holding public office, and a fine of 3,600 euros for crimes of prevarication and falsification of documents.

The decision has sparked political tension. The political party VOX has criticized the regional Partido Popular (PP), demanding explanations and questioning their claim to political integrity given the conviction of a former major leader. Meanwhile, PSRM-PSOE spokesperson Isabel Gadea and prosecutor Ginés Ruiz Maciá have also commented on the ruling, with Gadea stating that the ‘management model of the Partido Popular in the Region of Murcia has been condemned to prison’.

The crimes are linked to administrative actions taken during Sánchez’s tenure as mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, prior to his presidency of the Murcia region between 2015 and 2017.
