Madrid drives interregional transport cooperation with Alicante and other Spanish regions

Representatives from Madrid and Alicante met to exchange strategies on urban planning and mobility, discussing the progress of their respective strategic plans and topics such as housing, green infrastructure, economic development and transport. The officials highlighted the benefits of sharing experience and scheduled a follow‑up meeting in Madrid on 7 September.

The Madrid regional government, led by President Isabel Díaz Ayuso, presented a proposal to co‑finance public‑transport discounts for users from other autonomous communities. Under the plan, beneficiaries must be registered in Madrid, with the aim of facilitating access for young people. Five regions – the Valencian Community, Castilla y León, Extremadura, Cantabria, the Canary Islands and the city of Ceuta – have accepted the proposal, while Galicia has expressed reservations and called for reciprocal financing for Madrid residents using transport in Galicia. Madrid already co‑finances inter‑regional travel with Castile‑La Mancha.
