Madring circuit faces theft and local protests ahead of F1 debut

The new Madring circuit in Madrid is facing several challenges ahead of its inaugural Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix, scheduled for September 11–13. Spanish National Police have launched an investigation into the theft of approximately 300 meters of electrical cables from a tunnel section near the IFEMA exhibition center. The stolen cables were connected to temporary generators intended to power event facilities.

Beyond the theft, the event faces local opposition and logistical hurdles. Residents have raised concerns regarding noise, air pollution, and traffic, leading to legal challenges that have recently been dismissed by a Madrid court. To mitigate local impact, Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida has promised measures such as acoustic barriers and public transport access. Additionally, the city is implementing traffic restrictions in the San Antonio de Las Cárcavas neighborhood, where residents will require permits to access certain streets.

On the commercial side, the event is driving significant economic activity. El Corte Inglés has launched an exclusive official merchandising collection, and the local hospitality sector is seeing a massive surge, with hotel occupancy in central Madrid reaching 90% and projected revenue per available room (RevPAR) increasing by up to 175%.
