Argentina university funding dispute escalates following judicial ruling

Argentina faces escalating tensions over university funding and labor rights. A judicial ruling by Judge Martín Cormick declared the decree suspending the University Financing Law unconstitutional, ordering the state to update salaries for teaching and non-teaching staff and adjust student scholarships according to inflation. The national government has appealed this decision, leading to a legal standoff that could result in significant fines for non-compliance.

In response to the ongoing budget conflict, the Confederación General del Trabajo (CGT) has called for the fifth Federal University March on October 15. This mobilization aims to demand the full implementation of the University Financing Law and protest against the government's DNU 70/2023 decree. The protest is expected to coincide with a special session in the Chamber of Deputies where opposition members intend to debate and potentially reject the decree.

Additionally, teacher unions, including CTERA, SUTEBA, and FEB, have announced a 24-hour strike for the same day to support the educational and university sectors. While government spokesperson Adrián Ravier maintains that the administration is fulfilling its budget obligations and prioritizing fiscal balance, university authorities and academic leaders warn of a systematic attempt to undermine public research and higher education.
