Madrid honors ETA terrorism victims with new memorial and exhibition

The City of Madrid has held commemorations to honor victims of terrorism by the group ETA. Officials unveiled a monolith at Calle Correo 4 to remember the 13 people killed and over 60 injured in a 1974 bombing at the former Rolando café. This event marked the first indiscriminate attack by ETA against civilians.

This memorial is part of the ‘Itinerario de la libertad’ (Freedom Itinerary), a project featuring 40 commemorative plaques across Madrid. The locations of these plaques are now accessible via the city's geoportal and geolocation applications to provide historical context to the public.

Additionally, an exhibition titled ‘Gregorio Ordóñez. La vida posible’ has opened at the Centro Cultural Eduardo Úrculo in Tetuán. The exhibit honors the Basque politician assassinated by ETA over three decades ago, showcasing personal items, photographs, and letters to preserve his legacy and democratic values for younger generations.
