Madrid hospitals hit by cleaning strike and staff integration negotiations

Cleaning staff at the Hospital Universitario de Getafe began an indefinite strike after months of stalled collective‑bargaining talks. The CCOO union says the strike is a response to frozen salaries, alleged refusal by the external contractor OPTIMA Facility Services to improve pay and conditions, and what it calls the “complicity” of the Servicio Madrileño de Salud (SERMAS) and hospital management. The walkout has led to garbage piling up in wards and corridors, disrupting hospital services.

At the same time, the Community of Madrid approved new statutes for the Hospital Universitario Fundación Alcorcón, paving the way for the voluntary integration of its staff into the SERMAS system. The change triggers a new round of negotiations with unions, including CCOO, over employment conditions and salary terms, mirroring similar talks that took place for the Hospital de Fuenlabrada. Both developments highlight ongoing labour tensions within Madrid’s public health sector.
