Madrid launches San Cayetano, San Lorenzo and La Paloma festivals

The annual San Cayetano, San Lorenzo and La Paloma festivals began in Madrid's Centro district, featuring traditional verbenas, chotis dancing, and performances by artists such as Silvia Superstar, Olga María Ramos and dancer Ofelia Márquez. The celebrations also include activities at the Planetario de Madrid ahead of the first solar eclipse visible from the Iberian Peninsula on 12 August.

Paloma Miravet, head of SAMUR‑Protección Civil, delivered the opening speech, highlighting the neighbourhood spirit and solidarity that define Madrid's streets. She recounted a recent incident where neighbours helped an elderly resident after a fall, underscoring the value of community support beyond emergency services. Madrid councilor Carlos Segura praised Miravet’s three‑decade career and said the festivities reflect the city’s “immense heart” and commitment to shared traditions.
