Madrid launches university tour to promote bone marrow donation

The Community of Madrid has launched a new edition of the ‘Tour Médula Universidad’ to raise awareness among university students about the importance of bone marrow donation. Organized by the regional Transfusion Center, the campaign aims to inform students about the requirements and procedures for this life-saving altruistic action.

The initiative will visit several major institutions, including the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, and Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, with various campus visits scheduled throughout October.

Donating blood stem cells, or hematopoietic progenitors, is currently the only cure for many patients suffering from diseases such as leukemia or lymphoma. To register as a donor, individuals must be between 18 and 40 years old, weigh more than 50 kilograms, and be in good health. The Community of Madrid currently has over 76,895 registered donors, and new registrations through this university tour help expand the Spanish Bone Marrow Donor Registry (REDMO), increasing the chances of finding compatible matches for transplants.
