Madrid leads Spain in evolving leisure habits and live music culture
Madrid is experiencing a significant shift in leisure and social habits, characterized by the rise of the 'tardeo' phenomenon and a robust live music scene.
A study conducted by Noche Madrid and the Madrid City Council reveals that 58.8% of leisure venues in Madrid host afternoon sessions every weekend, more than double the national average in Spain. This trend, which gained momentum following the pandemic, has significant economic implications: the average spend per person during these sessions is €45, which is 34% higher than the national average of €33.50. For local businesses, 'tardeo' now accounts for 26.3% of total turnover.
Complementing these shifting social patterns, the city maintains a diverse underground music culture. Notable long-standing venues include La Coquette Blues Bar, a dedicated blues institution since 1982; Sala El Sol, a historic site for indie pop and rock associated with the 'Movida Madrileña'; and Café Central Ateneo, a prominent location for jazz performances.
