Madrid memorial flame honors Covid-19 victims six years later

Six years after the onset of the global pandemic, a memorial flame in Madrid continues to honor those who lost their lives to Covid-19. Located at the intersection of Alcalá Street, in front of the Palacio de Cibeles, the monument serves as a symbol of memory and resilience.

The memorial consists of a black steel circular piece, approximately two meters in diameter, resting on a steel prism. It bears the inscription: ‘Vuestra llama nunca se apagará en nuestro corazón’ (Your flame will never be extinguished in our hearts). Despite instances of vandalism, the flame remains lit.

Inaugurated on May 15, 2020, by Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida, the site was established to commemorate the deceased and recognize the exemplary behavior of Madrid's citizens during the health crisis. The monument was designed by the city's Works and Equipment area under the direction of architect Carlos Rubio Carvajal.
