Madrid Metro Line 6 modernization gains momentum with track renewal, automation and safety upgrades

Metro de Madrid is advancing a major modernization of Line 6, the city’s busiest underground ring line, as part of an €800 million programme that aims for full driverless operation by 2027. The construction firm Molins is supplying more than seven million kilograms of high‑strength mortar (Propam Grout 140 HP and 140 R) to reinforce tunnel supports, reduce vibrations and ensure structural stability.

The regional government has earmarked €13.2 million to replace 163 kilometres of rail (9,050 new 18‑metre rail bars) and an additional €3.2 million for spare parts to maintain the train fleet, with work carried out at night to avoid service disruption. Simultaneously, CAF is delivering a fleet of 48 driverless trains, each 109 metres long and capable of carrying 1,385 passengers, offering a 33 % speed increase and 20 % lower energy consumption. Tests will begin in summer 2026, with full automation targeted for 2027. Community President Isabel Díaz Ayuso has assured that no drivers will lose their jobs, as they will be reassigned within the network.
