Madrid Metro begins testing automated trains for Line 6

The Community of Madrid has begun nocturnal testing of new automated trains for Metro Line 6. These trials, conducted without passengers on Lines 10 and 11, are part of a transition to make Line 6 the first fully automated line in the network by 2027.

The regional government has invested over 531 million euros in a new fleet of 48 convoys. The new six-car trains, measuring over 109 meters, can carry up to 1,385 passengers—a 17% increase over current models. Key technical improvements include a 33% increase in top speed to 110 km/h and a 20% reduction in energy consumption.

Testing aims to evaluate safety, reliability, comfort, and interoperability. While initial trials are operated by a driver, the system will eventually function in fully automatic mode once construction is complete. Due to ongoing station works, service will be suspended on the southern arc of Line 6 between Sainz de Baranda and Laguna during the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd.
