Madrid Metro Line 11: Mayrit tunnel boring machine completes key section
The tunnel boring machine Mayrit has completed the underground connection between Comillas and the future Palos de la Frontera station as part of the extension of Madrid Metro Line 11. The machine, which measures 98 meters in length and weighs 1,500 tons, traveled 2,732 meters over 147 days to link these two points, passing through the Madrid Río area.
During the operation, the machine installed 1,606 concrete rings for the tunnel lining and extracted approximately 188,571 cubic meters of earth. The project utilizes Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) technology to maintain ground pressure during excavation. This expansion aims to transform Line 11 into a major diagonal transport axis for the city. Approximately 60% of the total planned length for the extension has now been executed through a combination of this tunneling machine and traditional excavation methods.
