Madrid President Ayuso faces scrutiny over €6.3M penthouse purchase
Isabel Díaz Ayuso, President of the Community of Madrid, is facing scrutiny regarding a €6.3 million penthouse in Chamberí purchased by the public entity Planifica Madrid. While Ayuso previously claimed ignorance regarding the real estate operations, government spokespeople confirmed she visited the property after its acquisition. The visit was reportedly considered as a potential option for a temporary office during renovations at the Real Casa de Correos, though no final decision had been made.
Madrid Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida defended the visit as “logical and reasonable” for someone intending to work in the space. Meanwhile, the regional government has announced it will sell the property to fund reconstruction efforts in the Sierra Oeste following recent wildfires.
In separate political developments, the Madrid government has accused the central Ministry of Housing of political discrimination for allocating €90 million in housing funds to regions aligned with the national government while excluding Madrid. Additionally, Ayuso’s attempt to lead a boycott of the Council for Fiscal and Financial Policy to protest a new regional financing model failed, as most other People's Party (PP) controlled regions declined to join the walkout.
