Madrid officials weigh Olympic bid amid government tensions
Madrid officials have expressed interest in hosting the Olympic Games but noted that a formal candidacy is currently unfeasible due to a lack of cooperation from the central Spanish government. Mariano de Paco, the Community of Madrid’s Minister of Culture, Tourism, and Sport, stated that institutional coordination is essential and suggested the national government has previously acted as an obstacle to major sporting bids.
Madrid Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida indicated that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has shown interest in the Spanish capital. He asserted that the city is prepared for the challenge, provided that a proper institutional consensus and agreement are reached.
