Madrid Prosecutor investigates hate speech chants at Atlético de Madrid match

The Hate and Discrimination Crimes Section of the Madrid Provincial Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into chants directed at Catalonia during an Atlético de Madrid vs. Villarreal match on August 23. During the entry of striker Julián Álvarez, some fans shouted slogans targeting FC Barcelona and Catalonia.

The investigation follows a complaint filed by Acció Cassandra, an association defending the rights of the Catalan national minority, which characterized the chants as “catalanophobic.” The Public Prosecutor's Office is examining whether the incident constitutes a crime against fundamental rights and public liberties under Article 510 of the Penal Code.

Authorities may request police assistance to identify the individuals responsible by coordinating with Atlético de Madrid and La Liga.
