Madrid protesters demand protection for state pension system FAST-MOVING

Approximately 25,000 people marched through central Madrid on Saturday to protest in defense of Spain’s public pension system. Organized by the State Coordination for the Defence of the Public Pension System (COESPE), the demonstrators marched from Atocha station to Gran Via, carrying banners to protect pensions from privatization and ensure they remain indexed to inflation.

Protesters demanded a 6% pension increase for 2027 and called for the minimum pension to be equated with the national minimum wage. They also sought to eliminate the gender pension gap and requested a public audit of the Social Security accounts. The mobilization comes amid concerns over an aging population, low birth rates, and wage stagnation.

The protests occur ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for November 29. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has accused the opposition People's Party (PP) of planning to weaken inflation-linked increases, while PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo has pledged to continue raising pensions in line with inflation if his party wins.
