Madrid public schools face significant teacher shortages

The CCOO union reports that 61% of public educational centers in the Community of Madrid have started the 2026/27 school year with incomplete teaching staff. In the southern region of the community, this figure rises to 65%.

According to data collected by the union, the issues stem from three main areas: unfilled teaching vacancies, delays in implementing previously agreed-upon staff increases for infant and primary education, and unfinished construction or renovation works in 27% of the consulted centers. These ongoing works are cited as a potential risk to student safety and organizational efficiency. These developments occur ahead of a teacher strike scheduled for October 14.
