Madrid tourism: exploring historical neighborhoods and viewpoints

Madrid offers diverse ways to explore its historical and cultural landscape through its distinct neighborhoods and panoramic viewpoints. Visitors can gain a strategic overview of the city from the Mirador Madrid, a panoramic terrace located at the Palacio de Cibeles, which requires a €4 entry fee and scheduled time slots.

The city is organized around several key axes: the Madrid de los Austrias and Royal Palace to the west, the Atocha corridor to the south, the Retiro and Salamanca districts to the east, and the Gran Vía and nightlife areas to the north. Popular walking routes include the architectural stretch of Gran Vía and the iconic Puerta del Sol.

To deepen this exploration, the Professional Association of Tourism Guides of the Community of Madrid (APIT Madrid) has proposed guided tours focused on specific local histories. These include a tour of Chueca, highlighting its social transformation and LGTBI+ heritage alongside its architectural landmarks, and a tour of the Barrio de las Letras, which explores the city’s Golden Age through the legacy of figures like Cervantes and Lope de Vega.
