Madrid traffic drops up to 35% during World Cup final

Analysis of Geotab vehicle‑data shows that Madrid’s urban traffic fell substantially while Spain celebrated its World Cup victory. On Sunday 19 July, total vehicle trips were 5.8 % lower than the previous week and average speed dropped 6 % to 44.3 km/h. During the match itself, trip volume declined between 32 % and 35 %, while average speed rose 14 %, indicating much freer streets outside the fan‑concentrated corridors.

The following day, 20 July, the official parade of the national team again altered traffic patterns. Between 12:00 and 18:00, average speeds were 3 %–9 % higher than a typical Monday, despite temporary road closures on main arteries. Speed reductions resumed after 19:00 as crowds dispersed, lowering speeds by 3.5 %–6.2 % compared with a reference Monday.

Geotab concluded that the reduction in regular commuter traffic offset much of the congestion caused by the celebrations, keeping the overall road network smoother during the peak hours of the event.
