Madrid updates Royal Palace lighting and honors Colombia after earthquake

The Royal Palace of Madrid has inaugurated a new monumental lighting system using RGBW LED technology. Funded by over 1.5 million euros from European funds, the upgrade allows for customized color scenes and improves energy efficiency by reducing primary energy consumption by more than 30%. The palace's facades were recently illuminated in red to celebrate the Spanish men's national football team's victory in the 2026 World Cup.

In a separate gesture of solidarity, the Community of Madrid has illuminated the facade of the Real Casa de Correos in the colors of the Colombian flag. This follows a devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck central and western Colombia on August 10, 2026. The seismic event caused significant destruction, including building collapses and infrastructure failures, resulting in over 200 deaths and thousands of injuries. Regional President Isabel Díaz Ayuso expressed deep condolences and support for the victims and their families.
