Madrid vehicle inspections see high non-compliance rates

Data from the end of 2025 reveals that approximately one-third of vehicles in the Community of Madrid failed to complete their mandatory technical vehicle inspections (ITV) within the required timeframe. Specifically, 33.2% of registered vehicles in the region did not comply with the obligation last year, a figure that has remained largely stable compared to 33.7% in 2024 and 33.4% in 2023.

Motorcycles show the highest rates of non-compliance, with 34% of registered motorcycles in Madrid failing to undergo the inspection in 2025. While passenger cars have a lower non-compliance rate, one in five cars failed to complete the mandatory check.

Authorities emphasize that having a scheduled appointment does not grant legal permission to drive with an expired certificate. Driving with an expired ITV is classified as a serious infraction, carrying a fine of 200 euros, which may be reduced to 100 euros if paid within twenty days. To avoid penalties, drivers can complete the inspection up to thirty days before the expiration date without altering the subsequent inspection schedule.
