Madrid's José Cubero Yiyo bullfighting school marks 50th anniversary
The Community of Madrid is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the José Cubero Yiyo regional bullfighting school, located in Venta del Batán within Casa de Campo. Established on October 10, 1976, by Enrique Martín Arranz, the institution has become a key training center for the bullfighting arts.
Currently, the school hosts approximately 140 students between the ages of nine and 20. The curriculum provides a comprehensive education, combining practical salon bullfighting sessions with theoretical classes twice a week. Students study topics such as bull lineages, field evolution, and various bullfighting techniques. The program also includes physical training and seasonal field trips to regional ranches.
Over its five decades, the school has produced several renowned bullfighters, including José Cubero Yiyo, José Miguel Arroyo Joselito, Julián López El Juli, and Juan Carlos Collado El Niño de la Taurina. The school is currently directed by matador Fernando Robleño.
