Madrid F1 circuit readies for September Grand Prix amid driver concerns

IFEMA Madrid is gearing up for the Spanish Grand Prix, scheduled for 11‑13 September on the new Madring circuit. Organisers expect 350,000 visitors, with more than 45,000 international guests and a sold‑out hospitality programme that could generate an average spend of €1,680 per fan. Sponsors have already contributed over €137 million, helping fund the circuit and expansion of the exhibition halls.

Ferrari conducted a private filming day on 9 July, during which Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc became the first Formula 1 drivers to run the 5.4‑km, 22‑corner layout. Hamilton complained about the high compression forces in the “Monumental” corner, describing the g‑forces as uncomfortable, while Leclerc said qualifying could be “tremendous” because of the close‑wall nature of the track.

To validate safety and operations, a two‑day Formula 3 test is set for 24‑25 August. Formula 3 CEO Bruno Michel called the session “valuable” for teams to assess the new challenge before the Grand Prix. Circuit director Luis García Abad stressed that the aim is a fully vetted circuit for the September debut.

Local opposition from Barcelona’s city council continues, but organisers remain confident the event will boost Madrid’s profile as a European motorsport hub.
