Madrigueras flooding kills one and triggers emergency response in Albacete

Severe flooding in Madrigueras, Albacete, has resulted in the death of a 102-year-old woman and the rescue of approximately 90 people. The deluge, which began Friday evening, saw over 140 liters of rain fall per square meter within a two-hour period, transforming streets into rivers and sweeping away numerous vehicles.

In response to the crisis, the Castilla-La Mancha regional government activated the METEOCAM emergency plan at Phase 1, Operational Situation 1. Regional President Emiliano García-Page announced that the government will request a declaration of a catastrophic zone for Madrigueras to facilitate access to state funds for compensating damages to private property and vehicles.

Public infrastructure has been significantly impacted; the local health center was flooded, necessitating provisional service arrangements through the Red Cross, and the local Guardia Civil barracks also sustained damage. Recovery efforts involving firefighters, Civil Guard, and emergency services are ongoing to clear mud and debris from roads and public buildings.
