Cilia Flores requests New York house arrest due to cardiac health concerns
Cilia Flores, the wife of deposed Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, has petitioned a New York federal court for house arrest, citing severe cardiac health issues. Her defense argues that the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn cannot provide the specialized medical treatment she requires. Flores, 69, has reportedly experienced chest pain, arrhythmias, breathing difficulties, and a weight loss of over 11 kilograms since her detention on January 3.
The proposed arrangement involves Flores residing in a private home within the Southern District of New York. To ensure security, the defense, supported by a proposal from Guidepost Solutions, suggested a regime including 24/7 armed guards, electronic monitoring, restricted visits, and intercepted communications. Flores' legal team has offered to cover all associated costs and suggested the retention of her passport as a guarantee.
Flores and Maduro face charges of drug trafficking and terrorism, which they both deny. Their legal teams have also filed motions to dismiss the charges, invoking head-of-state and diplomatic immunity. U.S. prosecutors have expressed opposition to the house arrest request. Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein has scheduled the trial to begin on June 1, 2027, and has recently ordered that Flores' medical records be sealed to protect her privacy.
