Mae Sa Waterfall flash flood sweeps tourists in Chiang Mai
A sudden flash flood struck the Mae Sa Waterfall in the Mae Rim district of Chiang Mai, Thailand, on August 15. The incident occurred within the Doi Suthep-Pui National Park while several tourists, many of whom were foreign nationals, were swimming in the area.
Park rangers and nearby tourists responded immediately to the surge, successfully rescuing those caught in the rushing current. Most individuals involved sustained only minor abrasions and received first aid on-site. However, one tourist was swept away and required transport to a hospital for treatment of pain and dizziness.
Following the event, authorities implemented safety measures, including the installation of red flags and ropes to prohibit entry into the water. The Mae Sa Waterfall has been temporarily closed to the public. Chiang Mai officials and the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation have announced plans to review and tighten safety protocols and early warning systems for visitors during the rainy season.
