Maersk launches Tangier-Casablanca rail link to ease Moroccan port congestion

Maersk is restructuring its Moroccan logistics operations by implementing a rail service that connects the port of Tangier to Casablanca. This initiative aims to alleviate chronic congestion at the Port of Casablanca, which handles approximately 35% of Morocco’s total port traffic and saw a 32% year-on-year increase in throughput in June.

Under this new model, Tangier Med serves as a primary maritime gateway and a key transshipment hub for the Gemini Cooperation, an alliance formed by Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. The service utilizes a hub-and-spoke model where cargo enters through Tangier and is transported via rail to Casablanca, providing an integrated end-to-end solution that includes customs clearance, inland storage, and final-mile delivery.

This strategic shift reinforces Tangier Med’s role within the Gemini network, which covers 56 ports. By leveraging Tangier’s global maritime connectivity and the new rail link, Maersk intends to offer more predictable transit times and improved inventory management for customers moving goods into Morocco’s main commercial center.
