Mafia Murder of Inspector Giovanni Lizzio in Catania, 1992

On 27 July 1992, Giovanni Lizzio, a 45‑year‑old chief inspector of the Italian State Police and head of the anti‑racket section in Catania, was ambushed at a traffic light on Via Leucatia. Two motorcycle‑bound hitmen opened fire with a .38 caliber pistol through the car’s open window, striking Lizzio in the head and chest. He was rushed to Cannizzaro Hospital but died of his injuries shortly thereafter.

Investigations linked the killing to the Sicilian Mafia clan led by Benedetto “Nitto” Santapaola, viewing Lizzio’s anti‑extortion work as retaliation for the earlier murder of judge Paolo Borsellino in the Via D’Amelio attack. The case contributed to a broader crackdown on Cosa Nostra that summer, and in 2003 Santapaola received a life‑sentence for ordering Lizzio’s murder.
