Mag- och tarmförbundet criticizes Swedish policy on childbirth injury compensation

The Mag- och tarmförbundet (Gastrointestinal Association) is criticizing the Swedish government and the Social Democrats for failing to address compensation gaps for women suffering from late-onset childbirth injuries.

Research from the University of Gothenburg indicates that approximately 4.5 percent of first-time mothers suffer sphincter injuries during childbirth. These injuries can lead to complications such as fecal incontinence that may not manifest until fifteen to twenty years later. Because the statute of limitations under the Patient Injury Act is ten years, many women find they have lost their right to financial compensation by the time the damage is discovered.

While political proposals have focused on improving maternity care and detecting injuries earlier, the association argues that current legislative frameworks have not kept pace with medical knowledge regarding the long-term effects of these injuries.
