Magallanes region advances health services and cruise tourism in 2025‑26

Chile's Seremi of Health and the Antártica delegation met in Cabo de Hornos to diagnose critical gaps in the local health network and plan coordinated actions aimed at strengthening medical response for the remote population of Puerto Williams and surrounding communes.

During the same period, the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic region reported a record cruise‑tourism season for 2025‑26. The region logged 177 cruise ship calls, carrying about 64,700 passengers, and saw the new Muelle Prat berth accommodate vessels up to 300 m, exemplified by the Oosterdam docking in Punta Arenas. Passenger handling at the dock rose from 50 % to 70 % of total arrivals. Puerto Williams also grew, recording 53 cruise calls and a 7.5 % increase in passengers. Scientific vessels made 42 calls, underscoring the ports’ dual role in tourism and research.

Both initiatives highlight the strategic importance of the southern tip of Chile for public health resilience and for its emerging position as a gateway to Antarctica.
