Magallanes Senator requests new funds amid regional economic decline
Senator Alejandro Kusanovic has called for additional government funding for the Magallanes region following a decline in economic activity. Data from the Ministry of the Interior, based on Central Bank information, indicates that the regional GDP fell by approximately 2% during the second quarter of 2025, accompanied by a 0.3% drop in household consumption.
While regional exports grew by 6.3% during the same period, Kusanovic emphasized the need for short-term aggressive measures to prevent further deterioration, stimulate employment, and support local industries. He noted that the strategic importance of the Strait of Magallanes should be reflected in budgetary decisions and infrastructure project financing.
