Magdalena Andersson outlines pension and school reforms ahead of Swedish election

Swedish Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson is positioning the party for the September 13 election, emphasizing both internal power dynamics and new policy proposals. Within the party, competing factions – the party leadership, the trade‑union federation LO, local party districts and the reformist wing – are jockeying for influence over the future government, budget decisions and ministerial appointments.

Andersson’s Almedalen speech presented concrete reforms: a new “worker pension” model modelled on Denmark’s Arnepension that would let long‑career workers retire early with a need‑based supplement, a proposal expected to cost several billion kronor; a plan to raise overall pensions and allow a statutory right to reduce working hours; and a small‑class‑size initiative limiting lower‑grade classes to a maximum of twelve pupils per teacher, also inspired by Danish policy. The proposals aim to attract voters while the party negotiates potential coalition partners after the vote.
