Magdalena Andersson tasked with forming new Swedish government

Following the 2026 Swedish general election, Speaker Andreas Norlén has tasked Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson with the mission of attempting to form a new government. Andersson is expected to present her findings to the Speaker of the Riksdag on September 28.

The final vote count reveals significant shifts in the Riksdag, with over one-third of the 349 members being new representatives. While the center-right parties—the Moderates, Christian Democrats, and Liberals—saw increases in their results, the Social Democrats experienced their worst election outcome since the introduction of universal suffrage.

Coalition negotiations remain complex. The Left Party is demanding ministerial positions, while the Center Party has expressed reluctance to meet with them. Ideological divides persist, particularly regarding the 'work line' versus social welfare increases, and the role of private companies in employment services.
