Magdalena region hosts artisanal fair and historical debates

The 6th edition of the Feria Caribe Artesanal, titled ‘Hilar el alma, tallar la memoria’, has commenced at the Universidad del Magdalena. Running from August 27 to August 30, the event brings together artisan delegations from various regions of Colombia to promote Caribbean cultural identity through conferences, demonstrations, and knowledge exchanges.

Key activities include discussions on the use of vegetable extracts in art and dialogues regarding traditional weaving and fiber techniques. The event aims to preserve ancestral techniques and encourage younger generations to engage with artisanal crafts.

Separately, historical discussions regarding the founding dates of the Magdalena region have emerged. Historians note that while there are efforts to commemorate 500 years of history for Ciénaga, the actual urban configuration of the municipality dates to the mid-18th century. The origins of the area are linked to the ‘Aldea Grande’ settlement, documented as early as 1526, which eventually evolved into the current municipality of Pueblo Viejo.
