R+V insurance provides €7.5 million for Magdeburg attack victims

More than a year after the December 2024 attack on the Magdeburg Christmas market, which killed six people and injured over 300, the R+V insurance company disclosed the financial compensation plan for the victims.

R+V evaluated personal claims amounting to around €9 million. Under Germany's road traffic law the insurer’s liability is capped at €5 million, and the Traffic Victim Aid contributed an additional €2.5 million, bringing total available funds to €7.5 million. Because the sum falls short of the total claims, each victim will receive roughly 80 % of their calculated entitlement.

The payout is supplemented by earlier federal support of up to €25 million, a state victim‑help fund in Saxony‑Anhalt, and more than €1.5 million raised through public donations. Victims with lasting health damage may also qualify for monthly compensation.
