Magdeburg Christmas market attacker receives life sentence

Saudi doctor Taleb Jawad al‑Abdulmohsen, 51, drove a vehicle into the crowd at Magdeburg’s Christmas market on 20 December 2024. The attack killed six people – a nine‑year‑old boy and five women aged 45 to 75 – and injured roughly 300 others.

The Magdeburg regional court sentenced al‑Abdulmohsen to life imprisonment, recognizing the particular gravity of the offence and reserving the possibility of future preventive detention. Authorities said he was influenced by far‑right ideologies, described him as mentally disturbed and markedly Islamophobic, and noted more than 100 prior reports of his behavior. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said the act was not officially classified as terrorism.
