Saudi doctor sentenced to life for Magdeburg Christmas market attack

On 20 December 2024 a Saudi‑born psychiatrist, Taleb al‑Abdulmohsen (also reported as Taleb A.), drove a rented BMW X3 into the crowded Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany. The one‑minute rampage killed six people – five women aged 45‑75 and a nine‑year‑old boy – and injured more than 300 others.

The trial concluded on 26 June 2026 at the Landgericht Magdeburg. The court found “particularly serious” guilt, imposed the maximum sentence of life imprisonment and declared the special severity of the guilt, which makes early release after 15 years unlikely. A preventive detention (Sicherungsverwahrung) was reserved but not ordered at sentencing. The proceedings lasted about 40 days, with over 100 witnesses and roughly 200 victims acting as civil parties. Prosecutors said the motive was personal grievance over a legal dispute, not ideological extremism.

The verdict closes a high‑profile case that dominated German media, sparked debate over public‑event security and influenced migration discussions ahead of the 2025 national election.
