Magdeburg hosts Christopher Street Day with high security

Approximately 3,000 people participated in the Christopher Street Day (CSD) event in Magdeburg on Saturday, August 22, 2026. While 10,000 people were originally registered for the demonstration and the program at Domplatz, police reported a turnout of around 3,000.

The event, held under the motto ‘Wähl Liebe’ (Choose Love), aimed to promote acceptance and visibility for queer people and serve as a sign against discrimination ahead of the state elections.

Security was a primary focus, with several hundred police officers from Saxony-Anhalt and support units from Berlin deployed to protect the gathering. This heightened security follows a fatal attack during a CSD event in Berlin in late July. For the first time, Domplatz was protected by heavy mobile vehicle barriers and bollards to prevent vehicle attacks. Despite the large police presence, authorities described the situation as ‘relaxed’ and largely undisturbed, though some isolated criminal offenses were recorded.
