Magdeburg Jobcenter employee accused of 1.5 million euro embezzlement

Prosecutors in Magdeburg have filed charges against a former team leader at the local Jobcenter for allegedly embezzling approximately 1.5 million euros. The individual is accused of diverting funds through the agency’s cash and booking systems more than 500 times between 2019 and 2025.

On average, each fraudulent transaction involved roughly 3,000 euros. The Magdeburg District Court must now determine if there is sufficient suspicion to allow the indictment to proceed. If convicted, the defendant faces a potential prison sentence ranging from six months to ten years.

The city of Magdeburg is reportedly preparing a claim for damages against the Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit), arguing that the agency is responsible for the loss of municipal funds caused by its employee. The whereabouts of the embezzled money remain unknown.
